Famished.

Her stomach rumbled as though she hadn’t eaten for days, and when she found herself standing in front of the noodle cart with the kid in the white tank top and the gold earring with the clipper ship, she ordered two servings. With one steaming bowl balanced on her knees, she scarfed the noodles and dumplings from the other and drained the broth. After that bowl was empty, she started in on the second portion. By the time the second bowl was empty, she was close to feeling normal again.

Kira stacked her empty bowls next to the half dozen others and paid for a bottle of cold water, which she chugged as she strolled west along Temple Street.

Her muscles complained as she walked, but she ignored the soreness. Instead she focused on the key. It had been in her pocket, that much was certain. The only explanation was it must have fallen out during the melee. If the bag was not in the hotel room, which Kira confirmed for herself, there were only two possibilities. She had come in low, with the gun aimed into the bathroom, where she guessed he was hiding. Instead the killer was in the tiny bedroom, and he batted the gun away and attacked with an onslaught of body blows. Did the door remain open, or did it close?

The fight played out in her mind.

The door swung closed. She remembered her back against it with nowhere to go. She attacked a vulnerable spot, his knee, and there were feints, body blows, and more strikes to his knee.

Find a weakness and exploit it.

They both dove for the gun and she grabbed his arm. She headbutted him twice, jammed her thumbs in his eyes, he screamed, and the panic on his face…

Was the panic due to her assault on his face? What a weird thought, but not out of the realm of possibility. Was the
